Donte Moncrief Should Sneak into the 2nd round after He Blows up the Combine

Why He’ll Succeed

  • Excellent at selling his routes.
  • Consistently makes contested catches
  • Very Good athlete. Great Leaper
  • Plays the ball and adjusts to it well in the air
  • Not a burner, but has speed to get & win vertical. Eats DBs cushion up with stride
  • Potential play maker that hasn’t even played his best ball yet

What Could Hold Him Back

  • Not Physical for his size, doesn’t use hands at LOS
  • Lacks 2nd Gear
  • Lackadaisical effort Blocking, just kind of “there”
  • “Dances” too much with DB at times
  • Can Do a better job of working back to the ball
  • With how explosive his lower body is, you’d expect more wiggle

Moncrief grades out as a 7.7. He was one of the hardest receivers to figure out. He’s big, incredibly athletic, but doesn’t play with the physicality you would expect from a 6’2 220+ pound receiver. Moncrief does the little things in his route running like get inside releases, sell his curls and double moves, to make me think he can be what Jordy Nelson is. Then he does things like round his out routes, not show the awareness in zone coverage, and struggle with physical corners where he could be an Austin Pettis, or just another guy.

I do believe his best football is ahead of him, it’s to be determined whether he develops into a #1 WR at this point. As of right now, he’d be an extraordinary #2 WR. He can stretch the field for an offense, and be the receiver a QB can rely on over the middle. Time will tell to see how good Moncrief can be. I expect him to blow the combine up and sneak into the 2nd round.
